Imbolc: Tending to the Seeds of Change

“Change. But start slowly, because direction is more important than speed.” — Paulo Coelho

As I write this, the skies beyond my desk window are moody and grey, while behind me the sunlight pierces through the side window, casting a soft bluish haze over the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Here we are, on the cusp between January and February, arriving into Imbolc on the 1st and 2nd February—Brigid’s season in the ancient Celtic tradition—marking the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

I see this halfway point as a threshold, an invitation to pause, ground, reflect, and feel into the first stirrings of spring as the earth begins to awaken from its deep winter rest and the light softly unfolds around us.

There is a subtle shift from the dark, inward energy of winter to the more outward, growing energy of spring. The first signs of spring whisper the need for courage and compassion as the winter very slowly fades.

Imbolc asks us to pay close attention, to gather our energy, and tend to the seeds of what may be arising inside of us. It calls for discernment—slowing down enough to recognize the subtle signs and instincts within.

A Quiet Meditation or Journaling Practice To Begin

Light a candle, take your favourite pen, delicious drink, and allow yourself to listen and be led by your intuition, shifting out of your head and into the body.

  • What is beginning to stir in your heart and mind?
  • What thoughts, habits, or relationships still feel in alignment with your deepest desires and purpose?
  • What are you being asked to shed or let go of?
  • What practices help you attune to what is unfolding?

This is not the time to forge ahead or have it all figured out, but rather to sense what is taking root in your life—even if the vision is not yet fully formed.

Interestingly, Imbolc is also deeply connected to the goddess Brigid, an archetype of fire, healing, poetry, and fertility – representing the awakening of feminine energy in its many forms. In modern times, she also embodies feminine spirituality, environmental stewardship, and artistic creation.

These qualities speak so well to the emerging shift towards the Conscious Feminine, especially in response to the rising force of the shadow side of the Masculine in our world. It calls us to cultivate a future rooted in collective care – for ourselves, each other, and the Earth.

How Does Our Yoga Practice Support These Times?

  • In an ever-changing world, our yoga practice can serve as an anchor – offering us time and space to pause, breathe, and be fully present with what is arising, approaching it with compassion, tenderness, and care.
  • The foundation for any shift or change begins with grounding in self-compassion. When we soften into our own heart, we create more space within ourselves to meet life’s challenges with ease.
  • Come back to yourself with each breath. Begin again. Returning to our breath helps us stay rooted, so we’re not easily swept away by external demands and distractions.
  • Our yoga practice helps us understand our own transitions through life through mindful presence of what is happening in each moment, whether moving through a physical pose or experiencing an emotional shift.
  • Our hearts are capable of holding so much more than our mind can imagine.
  • Yoga is remarkably adaptable. By shifting our focus – whether it’s on our breath, our internal experience or the sensations in our body – each pose can feel calming or energizing, challenging or accessible, nourishing or uplifting, depending on where we direct our attention.

As we deepen our individual practice, we also deepen our sense of community. Yoga reminds us that together, we are stronger.

I’m curious to hear how Imbolc lands with you. Reply with any thoughts, reflections or insights. I promise to respond to each one.
